Encounters media workshop: The new magazine is here!

The big day is almost here! We are happy to announce the second edition of the Encounter Magazine! To celebrate this special occasion, we have an equally special plan: Immediately after the kick-off on

Saturday, February 1st 2020 | at 13 h | Thomas-DehlerBibliothek, Martin-Luther-Str. 77

we invite you to join us in our distribution flash mob to get attention for our cause. We will split up into teams and distribute the magazine between 14-18:30h all over Berlin. Last time it looked like this: http://www.encounter-blog.com/en/encounter-our-magazine/

For this distribution flash mob we still need friendly supporters! Please send an email to:contact-english@encounter-blog.com

From 19h we invite you to a reception in the Lichtburgforum: Behmstraße 13, 13357 Berlin (Gesundbrunnen subway and S-Bahn station) with live storytelling by Pinar Özütemiz, a performance by the band * Bizler * (Azerbaijani, Persian and Turkish music), film clips and space for discussions and new encounters..

“To encounter means to meet in the middle” is this edition’s slogan on the cover of the magazine, which can be read in four different languages (English, German, Arabic, Farsi).

Our magazine is an effort to communicate topics that we find relevant in four different languages, and to meet somewhere in the middle. For this edition, we have even included Turkish as a fifth language in our inlay.

The texts, illustrations and photo stories deal with encounters: encounters with the German language, encounters with one’s own (his)story, with other people’s stories, fates and ambitions; encounters over and with food; encounters in libraries, in garden allotments, with hands – and with shoes; and they deal with movements and migration, such as the migration history of cities.

With the magazine, the project team also presents its main concern:

During times that are characterised by right-wing populism and growing islamophobia, in a world of deepening social divides and hardening front lines, we want to remind ourselves that social negotiation should always strive to find a common footing between individual views and opinions. Negotiation does not mean to impose one’s own view on others, but rather to discuss opinions, viewpoints and positions in order to meet in the middle of the road.

The Encounters media workshop is an initiative of the Stadtbibliothek Tempelhof-Schöneberg, in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin and the Mauerpark Institut e.V. Funded by “hochdrei – Stadtbibliotheken verändern” of Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation), the project started in May 2019.
